Break Open the Piggy Bank!

A Built by Wendy sample sale online? This is almost too good to be true. No elbow jabs to the ribs, no stripping down in front of strangers, no running to the ATM for cash and I don't have to leave the house??? Magical!

Pucci on My Mind

I have so many mental associations with Pucci that it’s hard for me to look at a Pucci print without thinking about one of the following scenarios:

A. A tan, lithe Marissa Berenson modeling a Pucci minidress in a sixties-era Harper’s Bazaar.

B. Nicole Richie and Rachel Zoe cleaning out the Pucci section in Decades after snorting lines of adderall in the bathroom.

C. A totally fly Pucci-clad grandma who spends 99% of her time lounging around her Palm Springs estate with a Capri cigarette dangling from her claw-like fingers.

I think I like the new Pucci campaign because it reminds me of the grandma scenario. Only it’s Stella Tennant instead of an actual grandma, which is kind of unfortunate. I would much prefer a tanorexic, Miss Havisham-esq granny hobbling around in a caftan with a teacup poodle and a cocktail. THAT would be fierce.

Celebrities Hanging Out With Other Celebrities

I get really excited whenever I see photos of celebrities that I like hanging out with other celebrities that I like. Like Anjelica Huston and Tilda Swinton at the Oscars. OK, so they weren’t exactly “hanging out” but I like to think that they talked smack about everyone’s dumb princess outfits and bonded over that whole ugly/pretty look that they both have going on. Seeing them together reminded me of another photo of Angelica Huston hanging out with Bianca Jagger at a Bob Dylan concert in the seventies. I realized that my computer is actually brimming with photos of fun and occasionally bizarre celebrity pairings, here are some of my faves:

Anjelica Huston & Tilda Swinton

Bianca Jagger & Anjelica Huston

Courtney Love & Jim Jarmusch

Marlene Dietrich, Anna May Wong & Leni Riefenstahl

Patti Smith & Sissy Spacek

Dana Valery, Sandie Shaw & Marianne Faithfull

Christine Keeler, David Bailey, Penelope Tree, Marianne Faithfull

Julie Christie & Monica Vitti

Sonny Bono, Cher & Twiggy

Dolly Parton & Cher

Cat Fancy: Zero + Maria Conejo

I can't get behind those Alexander Wang bike shorts (terrifying, really) but I can definitely appreciate Maria Conejo's smart and sassy cat dresses. Swoon!

Fashion on Film: Cat People

I love the Screen Shot posts on the Refinery 29 blog but I get a little annoyed because the Refinery 21 chick often blogs about movies that I've been meaning to blog about forever and it makes me feel like a lazy slacker when she beats me to the punch. Case and point: Cat People. Cat People is a sexed-up remake of the 40's classic of the same name. Nastassja Kinski plays a woman who turns into a totally aggro panther whenever she's feeling all hot and bothered. The clothes in the movie aren't that interesting but Nastassja Kinski is just so cool that whatever she wears becomes cool by association. Overall, the movie is a tad mediocre but I'm so into cats and crappy erotically-charged 80's thrillers that it doesn't really bother me. The poster, on the other hand, is pure brilliance.

Blog Alert!

My friend Ji recently started a blog called Luxirare and it's totally brill. Ji is one of the most hilarious people that I know and the only person that I know who's favorite Law & Order SVU character is Captain Cragen. Werid huh? Luxirare is a mix of fashion and food posts, both of which leave me drooling all over my laptop. She did a lovely little write-up about Chelsea #1 (as did No Good For Me and Designage --thanks guys!) back in January and I was super-psyched to see my magazine resurface on her blog last week in this post. Thanks Ji!

Ji looking hella ethereal

Ji's dog's Givenchy-inspired ensemble

???????????????????

Ji reading Chelsea, which can be can be purchased in New York at McNally Jackson, Spoonbill & Sugartown and the St. Mark's Bookshop. Show Pony in LA also has it, or you can send $10 in Paypal to chelsea@chelseamagazine.org and I will mail one to you. How convenient!

Rant Alert!

Just to give you a heads up, this is a seriously ranty post. I feel all ranty because I had a bad dentist/ Century 21 experience today (I honestly don't know which one was more traumatic) and I picked up the new issue of Purple, which I found to be completely and utterly appalling. For the last few years I have been mildly annoyed by the change in editorial tone, lack of experimentation, and the fact that it has become increasingly geared towards a heterosexual male audience. But I really can't stomach how blatantly commercial it is. The advertising and the editorial content are so integrated that it is difficult to distinguish the two. The current issue hawks Diane von Furstenberg, Belvedere vodka, and Fred Jewelry (what the eff is that anyway?) alongside a gazillion traditional advertisements. Why?

The strength of Purple was always it's sense of authenticity. Clothes were modeled by real people. Models looked like real people. Wolfgang Tillmans, Mark Borthwick and countless others contributed work that was completely devoid of commercialism and cliché notions of sexuality. I'm not saying that the Purple of today isn't a quality magazine, of course it is. The fashion content is always fantastic, the recurring "Terry Richardson's Life Story" feature is super-compelling, and I really appreciate what Mario Sorrenti, Katja Rahlwes, and a handful of other photographers are doing. It's just that the Purple of today is so far removed from the original magazine and that makes me majorly unhappy. And don't even get me started on that retarded Purple Nights thing that came out awhile back. In what universe does anyone want to pay $85 for a magazine that consists entirely of party pictures? Like, how many photos do I need to see of Oliver Zahm with some topless model? ZERO.

Moving on, I thought I'd take this opportunity to post a photo from Purple 16 of Frankie Rayder and Susan Cianciolo avec un chat. Enjoy!

New Lover!

I have a major soft spot for Lover (as does Megan, who's probably e-stalking several of their frilly little blouses as we speak) so I was super excited to see that their S/S '09 lookbook has finally popped up on their website. As usual, it's a mix of boy-meets-girl meets Picnic at Hanging Rock meets Joseph Szabo meets Sissy Spacek in Badlands. I can't wait to try on a pair of those cropped trousers (the denim ones are oddly appealing) and I imagine that everyone with a name starting with "L" is freaking out over that adorable Christiane F-esq baseball jacket. Cuteness!

Scream Queen

A couple of years a go I discovered Marlene McCarty's eerily precise (and just downright eerie) portraits of real-life teenage girls who have murdered their parents. Most of these crimes were provoked by the parents' disapproval of their daughter's boyfriend. So, to all the teenage Cat Party readers out there: if your parents don't like your boyfriend, murdering them will not solve your problems! However, you may be immortalized in a Marlene McCarty drawing, which could be cool. Not to put any ideas in your head.

Recently McCarty has focused her pen on a decidedly less homicidal subject, Anja Rubik, who is depicted wearing Rodarte in a series of portraits commissioned by the Visionaire Gallery. She used only graphite and a ball point pen to create these---my mind is thoroughly blown.
