Cat Fancy: Paris Vogue & V

Ellen von Unwerth and Terry Richardson have both created fantastic cat-centric editorials for the December issues of V and Paris Vogue, respectively. I'm sorry that I've been a bit tardy in posting these but scanning V is so annoying that I had to procrastinate it for as long as possible. My bad.

David Lynch just got Weirder

Being an avid fashion blog reader, I don’t know how I failed to hear about David Lynch’s quasi-recent perfume ad for Gucci, especially given the hoopla surrounding Sofia Coppola’s Dior ad. This lack of feeling “with it” prompted an hour-long Youtube Lynch-fest which proved to be quite informative. Here are some of my findings:

Gucci by Gucci Racquel! Freja! Blondie!

Clear Blue (pregnancy tests!!!)
I would love to know which genius ad exec suggested this pairing at the staff brainstorm. It was probably followed by, "Lets get Marty for the Quiznos ads."

Clean Up New York PSA
Almost as traumatizing as that Sarah MacLachlan animal abuse PSA. But not quite.

Opium I would like an explanation for the weird Twin Peaks music.

Georgia Coffee Definitive proof that David Lynch (and Kyle MacLachlan) will do anything for a paycheck. I seriously doubt that Special Agent Dale Cooper would get so hot and bothered over coffee that comes in a can.

Book Club: Cucina con Amore by Sophia Loren

I wish that all of my favorite celebrities had their own cookbooks (like maybe Barbeque with Dolly! or Truman Capote's Hors d'oeuvres Spectacular) but thankfully Sophia Loren actually has one: Cucina con Amore, originally published in 1971. I don't cook so I could care less about the recipes but I love the bizarre photos of Ms. Loren with all of my favorite Italian delicacies. Cheese anyone?

Dear Creatures

Here's a peek at Dear Creatures Spring/Summer '09 lookbook. Designer Bianca Benitez gathered inspiration from Cat Party-crush Sharon Tate, Valley of the Dolls and Priscilla Presley. I have a fascination with late 60s anything and puffy bouffants so the collection and photographs are looking mighty fine to me.

The Fall '08 collection is equally cute and full of sailor-y dresses, ruffled playsuits and pussy-bow blouses. Prices are very modest...check out a few of her items at Doe!

Vashti Blouse $70

Madeline Dress $95

Tell it to my Heart

I have been trying to eliminate cutesy clothes from my wardrobe for some time now but my unwavering attraction to heart motifs always gets in the way. I can’t resist heart-shaped pockets, lockets, Lolita glasses, that van I saw on the street the other day, basically anything with a heart on it is screaming my name. And it’s not good, because cutesy on me always runs the risk of looking bad-cutesy, like Bette Davis singing “Letter to Daddy” cutesy. So it really doesn’t help that hearts are everywhere I look these days, even at Balenciaga! As you can see, I have decided to translate my heart fervor into a excessive photoshop collage (I totally felt like I was on Stylista ). Unfortunately the cat is not for sale.

Guess Who?

It's baby Karl Lagerfeld! So nice to know he shares my appreciation of traditional Austrian garb, or at least he did when he was eight. Too adorable!

thanks for digging that up Cathy Horyn!

Ram On

Ram by Paul McCartney is one of the few records that I have ever been flat-out obsessed with. I probably spent 95% of 2005 listening to it with my roommates (the other five percent was spent pulling all-nighters and watching re-runs of What Not To Wear, in case you were wondering.) So, I was shocked and amazed to discover that Rotter & Friends are making "Ram On" t-shirts! I am disappointed that there is no Paul (or Linda) in sight, but I am really, really disappointed that Natalie Portman has one--not cool! What's next, Lauren Conrad in the Judee Sill shirt?

Buy it at Rotter & Friends or I Heart

Last Chance for Mayle!

Mayle Holiday has arrived, this is the last chance to scoop up her beautiful clothes as the end of Mayle is drawing near. I'd definitely consider any of her pieces to be an investment as many hard to find items are closing over retail on ebay...can't imagine how much her clothes will skyrocket after the line is gone for good. So sad!

Available at Mayle, La Garconne, and Jumelle to name a few. Hopefully this won't be the last we'll see of Jane Mayle, I imagine she'll be moving on to bigger and better things. Fingers crossed!

A Psychadellic Sensory Trip via iPhone

I admit that I'm pretty out of the loop when it comes to the latest technological gadgetry. I'd rather spend my money on clothes, magazines and cute catnip toys for my furry friends. The iPhone has never really tempted me as I am very fond of my Blackberry and I like the tactile button pressing that is apparently becoming obsolete. However, the new RjDj application for the iPhone is totally blowing my mind! This new "digital drug" would turn your daily walk to the corner store into a mind-altering LSD trip minus the harsh brain cell killing side effects. Here's an example of RjDj's sensory wonderland:

If you can't deal with watching the whole thing just skip to the end when the children are involved...so craze-o! The RjDj sounds so appealing to me right now because it would help to drown out the sound of my arch nemesis, the leaf blower. As much as I love Autumn, it always means leaves turning into a slippery treacherous mess on the sidewalk that needs to be cleaned up by evil leaf blowers. In fact, their offensive noise is making me go totally bananas as I type this, so I imagine if I had the RjDj the aggro noise would be magically transformed into pleasant sparkle-tastic background noise. I guess I could just listen to some music like a normal person but this seems a little more fun.

Book Club: Garbo by Ture Sjolander

All of the best things come from Sweeden: ABBA, Ikea, the Swedish meatballs at Ikea, and most importantly, Greta Garbo! There are a gazillion books about Greta Garbo but this one has the most cat pictures and is therefore the best. It also has a ton of candid photos, which I much prefer to the über-glam studio portraits that tend to dominate books about celebrities from her era. Garbo is out of print but you can purchase a copy from an amazon seller for less than five bucks, or read the whole thing here.

Magic Van

If Cat Party had it’s very own Cat-Party-mobile, it would probably look a lot like this crazy van that I spotted by the Prada store in Soho today. It's basically a stonery tribute to Heart, complete with little heart-shaped windows and an airbrushed portrait inspired by the eternally fabulous Little Queen cover. The weird Carrie hand is a little creepy though.

Love, Church + State

My favorite Portland designers Nathaniel Crissman and Rachel Turk of Church + State unveiled their Fall 08 collection a few weeks ago at the lovely Frances May. I'd been waiting patiently for photos of the collection to appear, they have finally surfaced! Everything they make is so thoughtful and perfect with pieces named after states in shades of navy, rust and cream to present a bit of Americana.

South Dakota Top, Montana Skirt

Oregon Dress

North Dakota Blouse

Nebraska Jumpsuit

Alaska Blouse, Connecticut Shorts

Delaware Dress

From the Church + State "about" page:

if Church + State were a day of the week, it would be Sunday
if it were a baked good, it would be homemade pie
if it were a liquor, it would be bourbon
and if Church + State were a friend, it would be the best one.
