Mag Hag: Distill

Buying a $20 magazine just for one editorial always makes me feel like I'm back in high school buying some crappy soundtrack just because it has one Hole song on it. This is why I appreciate the concept behind Distill magazine, which basically consolidates all of the best content from various alternative fashion magazines into a singular title. Judging from the cover, we should expect to see bits and pieces from V, Acne Paper, Numéro, and Man About Town, among others. I have yet to encounter a copy of Distill so I can't vouch for it's quality, but with an editorial board that includes Giles Deacon, Matthew Williamson, and Visionaire's Stephen Gan---it can't be half bad.

Cat Fancy: The Pucci Edition

Why is it that dogs get all the cool designer products? They get the Goyard dog dish, the Louis Vuitton leash, the Margiela chew toys designed to resemble discarded soda cans (ok, I made that last one up). But anyway, these big luxury companies need to understand that crazy rich people have cats too-- and they must be accessorized! If I had once piece of advice for Matthew Williamson, it would be to reproduce these adorable chokers (originally produced in the sixties) that can be worn by cats and their owners. And I’d tell him to lay off the butterfly motifs. Butterflies are lame.

Cheap Chic: Loulou de la Falaise for HSN

In the early nineties Diane von Furstenberg revived her brand by hawking those wrap dresses on QVC. Now Loulou de la Falaise is taking her bohemian wares to the Home Shopping Network, in what is most certainly the weirdest designer collab ever (except for maybe those Alexandre Herchcovitch Band-Aids ). While much of her collection is a bit too crazy-new-age-aunt for my taste, I'm totally lusting after that wolf head signet ring. Unfortunately her HSN TV segment aired yesterday (boo!) but you can still purchase her stuff here and you can even pay in installments! Wow!

Pretty Talk #2: Under Eye Conclealer

My parents blessed me with pesky hereditary dark circles under my eyes and no amount of sleep or hydration will keep me from looking like a perpetual insomniac. If you suffer from the same unfortunate affliction I will give you some advice I learned the hard way that will save you hundreds of dollars: eye creams claiming that they will reduce the appearance of under eye circles simply do not work. Maybe if you only have them occasionally but certainly not if they are hereditary, the cold hard truth is you and I are just stuck with them. Sure, some have light reflecting properties that can help but those purple-blue half circles will never disappear. I've rounded up my favorites but please let me know if you have any to suggest!


If I won the lottery I would use YSL Touche Eclat exclusively. Unfortunately the price tag ($40) is quite hefty for something I blow through so quickly but it really is the best and the gold pen looks pretty fly on my vanity. It's super light and sheer yet somehow manages to cover everything I have to hide. Every makeup artist swears by it, enough said.



Laura Mercier makes amazing cosmetics, especially the concealers and loose powder. The Secret Concealer is what I'm currently using and always seem to go back to. It's somewhat affordable, $22 for a tiny little pot but a little goes a long way. The Secret Concealer is super creamy and is great for ladies with dry skin, eliminating unsightly creases. Tip: don't let any sales girl pressure you into buying the special brush, all you need is your ring finger.



I had to throw a drugstore option in here and the Neutrogena Skin Soothing Under Eye Corrector is the best I've found. Comparable to Touche Eclat but much more palatable to those on a budget at $9.59! The only drawback being you have to apply more to get the right coverage so I end up going through it pretty quickly, plus the click wand is not as fancy as the YSL version so most of the product ends up at the base of the brush. However, it's still a bargain and contains soothing properties that eliminate puffiness. Just ignore the brush and apply with your finger instead!

Out in the Streets

I'm really camera shy but I decided to get past my issues and let my friend Craig snap me for his street fashion blog Altamira NYC (which you should read). I am disappointed that he denied my request for elongated Photoshop legs but he certainly did a lovely job of capturing my Talitha Getty meets Louise Brooks (or is it Morticia Addams?) ensemble.

Cat Fancy: W & T

I'm really happy that W and T magazine did the cats-as-accessories thing this week because the profoundly unfortunate demise of Mayle is totally bumming me out. W presented a delightfully awkward Juergen Teller shot of Tilda Swinton toting an obese cat around a park (maybe obese cats are the new oversize bags?) while T topped off a lovely bohemian ensemble with an equally exotic (and totally freaking adorable) kitten.

Every designer seems to be clawing their way into collaborations with major chains, even the cult darling Samantha Pleet! She'll be debuting her collection in select Urban Outfitters stores and online in October. Here's a preview:

People We Love: Edwige Belmore

Edwige is so cool, she makes Edie Sedgwick look like Stephanie Tanner. Like Edie, Edwige was a total "it" girl (for lack of a less annoying term) but she preferred a leather jacket and riding pants to furs and chandelier earrings. Edwige spent the eighties hanging out with Andy Warhol and Bianca Jagger, running the door at Le Palace, walking for Mugler and Gaultier, posing for Helmut Newton, and bedding nearly every other style icon of her era including Grace Jones, Madonna, Patti Hansen, and possibly maybe Loulou de la Falaise. Damn. Edwige's style was totally killer; she was a punk who wore heels and Saint Laurent pantsuits with a safety pin in her ear. And her aforementioned leather jacket was a hand-me-down from Serge Gainsbourg, which probably makes it the coolest leather jacket of all time. Cat Fancy: Numéro

I freaking love this Hilary Rhoda editorial in the new issue of Numéro, because it's basically a composite of all of my favorite things: cats, cupcakes, beehives, christmas, pastels, cheesy decor, etc. It's almost like I dreamed it up, except I would have added Karen Elson, Lara Stone, and some Jacqueline Susann novels.

Book Club: Cheap Chic

All copies of That Extra Half Inch by Victoria Beckham and Style from A to Zoe by Rachel Zoe should be confiscated by the government, burned, and replaced with Cheap Chic by Caterine Milinaire. Originally published in 1972, Cheap Chic was the first book that celebrated unconventional personal style and encouraged it’s fashion-savvy readers to shop in thrift stores. It includes interviews with Diana Vreeland and Fran Leibovitz, illustrations by Yves Saint Laurent, and lots of photos of cool girls in cool outfits looking cool and stuff. Unfortunately, copies of Cheap Chic are rare and thus sold at incredibly inflated prices (usually between $50-150). The updated version (which I have) is a little harder to come by, but it’s pink and you know, updated, so it’s totally worth it.
